Description
| General character of the site | The Swiss National Park is a high mountain nature reserve (altitude 1500 to 3174 m), situated mainly in the Lower Engadine Dolomites. It is fully protected against human onslaughts: from the day it was established, hunting and fishing were prohibited and forest exploration and grazing ceased. It shares a border with the Italian National Park Stilfser Joch. |

| Vulnerability | In the 1996 and 1997 annual reports addressed to the Council of Europe it is pointed out that, in part as a result of the decrease in the Red Deer population, there are no ungulate population problems in the Park. Latest scientific research also shows that the ungulate population corresponds to the carrying capacity of the National Park. |

| Cultural heritage | There are traces of settlements from the Stone Age onwards. From the 11th to the 17th century there were iron, silver and lead mines in operation, and foundries near Il Fuorn; large quantities of timber are felled and floated down the Spöl and the Inn to the Hall saltworks in the Tyrol. |
