Description

General character of the site Weltenburger Enge is a gorge about 6 km in length, one of the most beautiful and striking landscapes of the upper Danube; it crosses one of the foothills of the Swabian and Franconian Jura 20 km south-west of Regensburg. It features 100m high rock faces and geological strata of considerable palaeontological interest, with reef facies. There are numerous important archaeological and historico-cultural remains.
Quality
Vulnerability Construction and exploitation of the future Rhine-Main-Danube canal. Lining of a hydro-electric scheme 9 km upstream of the reserve; signs of fatigue in the forest. The grand firework display "The Danube on Fire" has not been authorised in recent years.
Designation
Owner Much of the reserve is owned by the Land of Bavaria or the State Forest Service (Kelheim district).
