Phrygana habitats are separated according to the species composition characteristic of different parts of the Mediterranean biogeographic region: west Mediterranean phryganas are usually characterised by Astragalus massiliensis or Anthyllis hermanniae; central Mediterranean phryganas may be dominated by a variety of species; east Mediterranean phryganas are widespread and diverse.
