Illyrian chestnut-sessile oak forests
Description (English)
Quercus petraea forests of extremely acid substrates and warm humid climates of the basins of the Drava and Sava in Slovenia, Croatia, northern Bosnia-Herzegovina, including the Mecsek hills of southern Hungary, in which Castanea sativa plays an exceptionally important role. Their canopy is extremely mixed, including, in addition to the two species already mentioned, Carpinus betulus, Fagus sylvatica, Acer pseudoplatanus, Acer campestre, Sorbus torminalis, Fraxinus ornus, Prunus avium, Malus sylvestris, Tilia platyphyllos, Tilia cordata, Populus tremula. The understorey comprises a combination of acidophilous, thermophilous and Fagetalia species among which Rubus hirtus, Melampyrum pratense, Pteridium aquilinum, Veronica officinalis, Genista tinctoria, Luzula luzuloides, Hieracium umbellatum, Lathyrus montanus, Vaccinium myrtillus, Calluna vulgaris, Lembotropis nigricans, Chamaecytisus supinus, Viola reichenbachiana, Aposeris foetida, Euphorbia dulcis, Primula vulgaris, Helleborus dumetorum.
