Serpentine steppes
Description (English)
Steppic grasslands of serpentine outcrops, dispersed over a wide range in Central Europe and the Balkan peninsula. Open communities in shallow stony soils or eroded sites. Serpentine outcrops also exist in northwestern Europe, in Tuscany and in mediterranean Greece (Euboa); steppic grasslands have not formed on them or are less strongly individualised than those described here.
