Illyrian Castanea sativa forests

English name: Illyrian chestnut forests

Description (English)

Castanea sativa-dominated forests and naturalised plantations of the Carpinion betuli illyricum zone, locally, notably in Bosnia-Herzegovina, extending into the Fagion illyricum zone, apparently constituting, with the subthermophilous oak region of the Balkans, a centre of indigenousness of the species. Extensive stands are recorded, in particular, from northwestern Croatia, neighbouring Slovenia, northern, central and eastern Bosnia-Herzegovina.
