Summary

Present in the upper infralittoral zone in areas sheltered from wave action and currents, as well as where light levels may be low. Algal cover is limited and patchy and includes species tolerant of low light levels but with weak attachment and which therefore cannot survive in wave exposed conditons. These sciaphilic algae generally form diffuse communities with low coverage.

Indicators of quality:

There are no commonly agreed indicators of quality for this habitat, although particular parameters may have been set in certain situations e.g. protected features within Natura 2000 sites, where reference values have been determined and applied on a location-specific basis.
